What is an Akhara (also akhada)?

An Akhara is a wrestling stadium. It is an association of the diverse factions of holy people, Vairaghis, and yogis who have denied the world. The historical backdrop of an Akhara goes back to the around 2500 BC when Adi Shankaracharya built up seven Akharas (maybe 10 as they are otherwise called Dasnaami), Mahanirvani, Niranjani, Atal, Avahan, Agni and Anand Akhara.

Akhadas appeared amid the eighth century AD when Adi Shankaracharya built up seven Akhadas to be specific Mahanirvani, Niranjani, Juna, Atal, Avahan, Agni and Anand Akhara with a mean to fortify the Hindu religion and join those honing distinctive ceremonies, traditions and convictions.
